Domains and hosting: what they are, how they differ, and what they cost each year

Two words you hear whenever a website is made. The domain is the site's name; hosting is where the site lives. Understand both and you'll know what you pay next year — and why the domain should be in your own name.

When you talk about getting a website, you'll hear about domains and hosting. They work together, but they are different things.

What a domain is

The domain is the name customers type, such as yourshop.com — your shop's address on the internet. It must be renewed every year; forget, and the name may go to someone else.

What hosting is

Hosting is where the site's files and systems are kept — the house at that address. Some sites that only show information can be hosted for free, while sites with an admin system, a database or order handling need a server, which costs money each month or year.

Rough prices

A .com domain usually costs a few hundred baht a year. A .co.th domain costs more and needs company documents; a .in.th domain can be registered by anyone. Hosting depends on the size and systems of the site, from free to hundreds or thousands of baht a month.

Why the domain should be in your name

If the domain is registered in the designer's name, you may not be able to move it when you change who looks after your site — or you may have to start again with a new name customers don't know. Before hiring, ask whose name it will be in, and keep the login yourself.

Ask everything before you hire

What will the domain cost next year? Hosting? Is there a yearly care fee? Can you move elsewhere? At CAN DESIGN WEB STUDIO we tell you on day one: the domain is registered in your name and every file of the site is handed over to you.
